The law firm of Phelps Dunbar traces its roots to 1853 when Joseph Dirrhammer was admitted to practice in New Orleans. Dirrhammer and John Hansen Kennard later formed the firm of Dirrhammer and Kennard. After several successor firms and changes in name, the firm became Phelps, Dunbar, Marks & Claverie in 1943. The firm name was changed to Phelps Dunbar LLP in 1990.

It all began when Frederick Fish opened the office in Boston. Since then we have left a footprint in every area of the technology map, from patenting the early telephone to patenting the keys on a Steinway piano.

Lloyd Landreth began his environmental career as a fisheries biology student and scientist in the central and northwestern United States. During his tenure with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Washington, Lloyd had the opportunity to observe how the law and fisheries science merged through the landmark Boldt decision. With an interim stint as an air quality regulator, Lloyd transitioned from the natural and environmental science field to pursuing an environmental law career by attending the University of Colorado School of Law. He graduated in 1986.

Lloyd’s legal career led him to the regional law firm of Gardere Wynne Sewell, where he worked as a Partner until the summer of 2002, when a change in firm practice group emphasis led to the closing of Gardere’s Tulsa office. With a group of supportive and outstanding clients and staff, Lloyd made the decision to manage his own law practice, and founded the Landreth Law Firm in September of 2002. Lloyd has been fortunate to work in a variety of public and private sector positions and collaborate with some of the preeminent law firms and environmental lawyers in the nation.

Their goal was to continue to provide a full range of first-rate legal services to their clients, but in a setting that permitted them to more effectively control costs and to improve the quality and responsiveness of these services.

Edward Pease Davis, K.C. founded Davis LLP in Vancouver, Canada on March 25, 1892, just six years after the city’s incorporation. Born in Ontario and a graduate of the University of Toronto, Davis had the privilege to work for major clients in British Columbia early in his career including Vancouver’s second mayor David Oppenheimer, Canadian Pacific Railway and the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1910, the Canadian Law Journal said of Davis, who was then 50 years old:

"It is an unusual thing in a Canadian province to find one man who is so admittedly at the head of his profession that he is not regarded as having a rival... Davis,... by universal acknowledgement is easily leader of the Bar... His capacity for work is phenomenal, quite beyond the physical capacity of most men."

The Registrar of the Supreme Court in Vancouver noted at the time that three quarters of all writs filed to commence actions came from Davis's firm.

Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property firms in the United States, has approximately 160 attorneys, supported by a full complement of scientific advisors, patent agents and paralegals.
