Our roots date back to 1897 when R.J. Coulter founded Coulter Undertaking Company in Dayton, Tennessee, 30 miles northeast of Chattanooga. He started a new funeral home in 1922, at 801 Vine Street in Chattanooga. In 1960 a new branch was built at 601 Ashland Terrace. The funeral home has been remolded three times over the years more than doubling the size of the facility. In 1980, Ross Lane purchased the funeral home changing the name to Lane Funeral Home.

Ed English has managed the business since 1980. The number of families served has increased from 137 in 1980 to 328 in 2010. Ed and his staff have been involved and committed to the community throughout the years. Each staff member is an active member of a local church and involved in various civic clubs. Ed has been a member of the Red Bank Chamber of Commerce for many years and has served two terms as President. Ed was chairman of the Red Bank Jubilee for many years and is Chamber of Commerce, Vice-President of Programs. He has received the Red Bank Chamber Outstanding Business Person of the Year award. Ed teaches Sunday School at Red Bank Presbyterian Church and speaks at local churches and civic groups. In 2004 the funeral home was runner-up in the Reader’s Choice Award (Chattanooga Times Free Press) for best funeral home in the tri-state area. (15 funeral homes in the contest). We received the Reader’s Choice Award as Best Funeral Home in 2006 and 2007 and top finalist (in the top three) in 2008, 2009 & 2010.
Ed English is President of Lane Funeral Home at 601 Ashland Terrace in Chattanooga. Ed began his career with the Coulter Funeral Home in 1971. He is married to Deborah Coulter English whose great-grandfather, R. J. Coulter, founded the Coulter Funeral Home in 1897. They have one son and daughter-in-law, John Coulter English and Cara English and granddaughter, Sarah. In 1980, Ed became the manager of the Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel and has been the managing partner of the business since 1993. A licensed funeral director, Ed has been active in the North River community for over 38 years. He has served as president of the North Chattanooga Lion’s Club, has served three different terms as President and many years as Vice President of Programs of the Red Bank Chamber of Commerce where he presently serves as Vice President (Programs). Ed is a member of Tennessee Funeral Directors Association. He is a member of the Red Bank Presbyterian Church where he serves as a Sunday School Teacher.Kellar, Managing Partner
Mike began his career with Lane Funeral Home in 1973 as a bookkeeper and has been a licensed funeral director for many years. He is a graduate of Tennessee Wesloyan College. Mike has been married to his wife, Pattie Roach Kellar, since 1972 and they have two grown daughters and one grandson. Mike and Pattie are members of Red Bank United Methodist Church. He is a member of the Tennessee Funeral Directors Association and the Red Bank Chamber of Commerce. Mike is a member of the Red Bank Lions Club, past president of the Chattanooga Valley Kiwanis Club and has been with Buckner International “Shoes for Orphans” project.Gene Land, Funeral Director / Embalmer
Gene a 36 year employee is a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Tennessee and Georgia. He has been married since 1974 to Lynda Patton Land and they have a daughter, Ginny (Adam) Smith and grandson, Xander. He is a member of Red Bank Baptist Church, where he serves as Associate Director of Young Adult III and is an inactive ordained deacon. He is also involved with the music and drama programs. He is a member of Tennessee Funeral Directors Association and Red Bank Area Chamber. Tammy has been an Administrative Assistant at Lane Funeral Home since May of 1999. She has been with Carriage since August of 1997, beginning at the monument company. As an etching artist, she personally designed many markers and urns for families. Because of her artistic talents, she has been involved in many special projects at the funeral home. Tammy works with the families to personally create and design the memorial folders and other tributes to their loved ones. She is a member of Red Bank Chamber of Commerce. Tammy and Robert, her husband of 30 years, have a son, Jacob, and daughter and son-in-law, Anna Marie and Robert Ferguson. They are members of Pilgrim’s RestBaptistChurch.George Gulas, Family Service Counselor
George lived in Chattanooga since 1950 and is former owner of Gulas Restaurant. He started in the funeral industry in 1997 as Family Service Counselor preplanning funerals. George and his wife, Cindy Turner Gulas, have two children, Elana and George Jr. They are members of Christ United Methodist Church in East Brainerd. Bart retired from Link Systems before joining us at Lane Funeral Home. He is a member of Southern Machine Engineers. Bart was a Paratrooper in the United States Army. He and his wife, Barbara, were longtime members of Calvary Bible Church and are currently members of Stuart Heights Baptist Church and have two daughters, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.Wendell Merrell, Funeral Assistant/Ambassador
Wendell is a funeral assistant at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel. He was born in Bersheba Springs, raised in Dalton, GA, and lives in Middle Valley with his wife, Nancy. They are the parents of two children, Christopher Merrell and Sheri Irion, and the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren. Virginia began working as an Ambassador for Lane Funeral Home in 1982. She is a member of First Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga. Virginia has been active in ladies' organization of church having served as a circle leader. Pat retired from a 25 year career at Erlanger Medical Center in 2005 and began working as an Ambassador for Lane Funeral Home in October 2008. Pat and her husband Bobby share their love with a blended family of five children and five grandchildren. Pat and Bobby are members of Lupton Drive Baptist Church.

Jerry Miller, Funeral Assistant/Ambassador
Jerry began as an Ambassador for Lane Funeral Home in 2009. He was an iron worker having worked for Dupont and retired from TVA. Jerry was a coach for Dixie Youth Baseball. He and his wife, Phyllis, have two children and seven grandchildren and are members of Calvary Bible Church. He enjoys woodworking and fishing. Ken Chambers, Funeral Assistant/Ambassador
Ken joined the Lane Funeral Home team in June of 2011. Ken is a retired Church of Christ Minister having served many congregations in various states for over 43 years. Ken and his wife of 47 years, Jewel, attend Mountain Creek Church of Christ. He and his wife have two sons, Ken and Daniel; and four grandchildren: Andrea, Christopher and Jackson. Ken has Master of Divinity Degree from Amrige University in Montgomer, AL with a specialty in Grief Counseling. Jim retired from duPont, having served five plants during his career. He joined duPont from the U.S. Army where he had 14 years of service as an Infantry officer. Jim attended The University of Tennessee and holds a Master of the Arts degree from Middle Tennessee State University. He and his wife, Pauline, have two children, Chris of Knoxville and Lauren West of Hixson and one granddaughter, Emily West. They are members of the Rivermont Presbyterian Church where both have served as Deacons and Ruling Elders. Both share a love of discovering their ancestry. Bill earned a BA Degree from the University of Mississippi. He served 4 years in the Air Force overseas as an officer. After a career in insurance located in NW Mississippi, he moved with his family to Chattanooga in 1994. Bill and his wife, Inger Johanne Hegland Flautt, attend St. Jude Catholic Church where he is involved with volunteer work for his church. He and Inger have two daughters and three grandsons.
