William Henry DeWitt was the son of Rev. Samuel DeWhitt of Smith and later Macon counties in Tennessee.I have found no records where he spelled his name with the silent h but maybe he dropped it out of the surname as others have done.I believe he was born in 1827 in Smith county,Tennessee and died in 1896 in Chattanooga,Hamilton county,Tennessee.It appears that about the last 20 years or so of his life was spent in Chattanooga.He was a member of the Tennessee state legislateure from 1855-1857,a delegate from Tennessee to the Confederate Provisional Congress 1861-1862 and a state court judge.He was pardoned from his Confederate activities by president Andrew Johnson.He was also a member of the Freemasons.He died April 11,1896 in Chattanooga and is buried in Forrest Hills cemetery in Chattanooga. He was a member of the prominent law firm De Witt,Shepherd and Frazier.The other members of the firm were Lewis Shepherd and James B.Frazier,twice elected governor of Tennessee.
His mother was Mary A McWhorter or McWhirter.Both parents were born in South Carolina.He was said to have been descended on both sides of his family from Revolutionary War soldiers.
He was married twice .His first wife was Emeline Price.They had 5 children. Only one ,a daughter named,Lude or Lade DeWitt,survived to adulthood.Two of the children died in infancy and 2 died mysteriously with their mother on the same date.His second marriage was to Bettie Wilson,granddaughter of Gen.Samuel Wilson,buried in Old Mulkey cemetery in Monroe county,Kentucky.Her grandmother was Elizabeth Hughlette.
They appeared to have had 2 sons,William H.DeWitt,Jr. and Hughlette DeWittt .William ,Jr. seems to have also been prominent in Chattanooga.I am seeking descendants of Judge DeWitt as his father was the older brother of my 3rd great grandfather,William French DeWhitt.Both William and his brother Rev.Samuel appear to have had their surnames spelled several ways in records.In Smith county,Tennessee land records,it is spelled DeWhit and DeWhitt.But on his tombstone it is DeWitt.
William H.DeWitt appears to have had 2 brothers and 2 sisters,Allen Wakefield DeWitt,Samuel DeWitt,Francis B DeWitt (married Thomas Jefferson Houser )and possibly another sister named Polly.
