Asbestosis compensation claim Biogarphy
Source(google.com.pk)Shipbuilding was a huge industry in the North East of England with numerous shipyards lining the banks of the River Tyne, River Wear and River Tees with access to the North Sea.
Along the River Tyne there were shipyards stretching from the coast at North Shields and South Shields and along through Jarrow, Hebburn and Wallsend to the more inland areas like Walker in Newcastle.
Swan Hunter is probably the most well-known of all of the shipyards on the Tyne but there were many more including Hawthorn Leslie, Palmers Hebburn, Smith’s Docks, Wallsend Slipway, Vickers Walker Naval yard, Brigham and Cowan, Middle Docks, John Readhead & Sons, Clelands Shipbuilders and Mercantile Dry Dock to name but a few.
In Sunderland, the shipyards included Bartrams, William Doxfords, Austin & Pickersgills, Sir James Laing, TW Greenwell & Co and JL Thompsons many becoming part of British Shipbuilders Corporation during the late 1970's. At one point Sunderland was known as 'the largest shipbuilding town in the world'.
In Middlesbrough, the main shipyards were Smith's Docks (expanded into Teesside from their site on Tyneside) and Haverton Hill which was originally owned by Furness Shipbuilding before being taken over by Swan Hunters in the 1960s.Asbestos and North East ShipyardsExposed to Asbestos in the Shipyards
Asbestos was heavily used during the 1950's, 1960’s and 1970’s in the shipbuilding industry mainly as an insulator for boilers, pipe work and between compartments within the ships’ deckheads and bulkheads. Asbestos was present as insulation in ships which were being built, re-fitted, repaired or decommissioned in shipyards across the North East of England.
Despite regulations aimed at controlling the use of asbestos from the early part of the last century and clear government instructions being given to the shipbuilding industry in 1945 about the dangers it was commonplace for asbestos to be present in the air onboard ships. This was due to the activities of engineers and laggers who were working directly with it resulting in everyone working in the same area being exposed to the harmful dust.
It was also commonplace in shipyards at that time for employers to give no warning about the dangers workers faced from inhaling asbestos and no protective clothing or equipment to be made available to minimise exposure to the deadly dust.
Shipyard workers often travelled home to their families wearing the overalls they had worn throughout their working day contaminated with asbestos dust.
The import and use of all types of asbestos in the UK was finally banned in 1999. The average time (latency period) for symptoms of any damage caused by asbestos to show is 35 years. Former shipyard workers exposed long before the ban came into force are among the highest risk group for developing an asbestos-related illness now and in the future. The shortest latency period is between 10 to 15 years and the longest is over 50 years.
Asbestos Related Illnesses suffered by Shipyard Workers
Shipyard workers made ill by exposure to asbestos
Different illnesses can be caused by exposure to asbestos and none of them are reversible.
The most well-known is probably asbestosis which is often misused as an umbrella term for all asbestos-related diseases.
Asbestosis normally only affects workers who have been exposed to a lot of asbestos or over a long period of time. Former workers who were employed in the shipbuilding industry for a number of years could be at risk of developing this illness. Asbestosis is caused by asbestos fibres scarring the lung tissues, known as fibrosis. The fibrosis can cause the lungs to lose elasticity and not function properly, causing breathing difficulties, a dry cough and sometimes curvature of the finger nails and finger tips and known as ‘clubbing’.
The most serious illness caused by exposure to asbestos is mesothelioma which is always fatal with sufferers often only having months to live after being diagnosed. Mesothelioma can develop even after relatively brief periods or low levels of exposure to asbestos therefore anyone who worked in shipyards for only a relatively short time before the 1980’s could still be at risk.
Other conditions caused by exposure to asbestos include pleural plaques, pleural thickening and lung cancer. Compensation is not currently available for pleural plaques following a House of Lords decision in 2007.
