The result of their work, published in the January 2003 edition of the magazine, caused its share of disputation in the local legal community but also a fair amount of appreciative comment from readers who have occasion to retain counsel in the course of their work. Readership stats show that the online version of that list is, to this day, consistently one of the most widely viewed stories from the early history of the Post.
Now that Nashville Post magazine has returned to publication, we are reviving the list as our annual 101 Top Lawyers feature. We have done our best to canvass the legal community and some if its customers with a view toward assessing the strongest players in each of numerous legal niches. We have made a special effort to identify attorneys who are not necessarily very good self-marketers but whom peers hold in high esteem.
To echo words from the 2003 list: Needless to say, an attorney’s inclusion on the list does not ensure that he or she is the ideal lawyer for you.
But it does mean the practitioners on the following pages have been rigorously vetted by the people who see their work first-hand. All are worthy of recognition as belonging among Nashville's 101 Top Lawyers, as of 2011.
Paul Ambrosius handles complex litigation and intellectual property matters for clients in the health care, securities, technology, and nonprofit sectors. His litigation practice includes federal and state court appeals as well as appeals from administrative agency decisions. He teaches appellate practice at Vanderbilt Law School, serves on the Executive Committee of the Tennessee Bar Association's Federal Practice Section, recently chaired the Appellate Practice Committee of the Nashville Bar Association, and is an active member of the American Health Lawyers Association. He is a member of the Bars of the United States Courts of Appeals for the Sixth, Eleventh, and Federal Circuits.
Mr. Ambrosius received his law degree from Columbia University in 1997, where he was a Human Rights Fellow and served as the Managing Editor of the Columbia Human Rights Law Review. He was a James Weber Linn Scholar at the University of Chicago, where he earned an A.B. in history in 1993 with general and departmental honors. He is fluent in French.
Mr. Ambrosius began his legal career with Winthrop Stimson Putnam & Roberts in New York City (now Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP), concentrating on multidistrict and international litigation and arbitration.
Mr. Ambrosius has produced and given seminars on appeals and health privacy issues, and has advised national, state, and local political committees on campaign finance and election law.
Pam Taylor is a Member of the firm based in Stites & Harbison's Nashville office, where she focuses her practice on Family Law.
Ms. Taylor has practiced domestic relations law for 25 years in Georgia, Massachusetts and Tennessee, handling all manner and complexity of matters—from non-contested cases where there are no children involved and the assets are easily identified to cases that are vehemently contested and have complex valuation issues. She has often represented Nashville-area people who are involved in the entertainment industry, including songwriters, musicians and performers. But, with the downturn in our economy, many people cannot find gainful employment. Unfortunately, student loans must still be paid, even if you cannot find a job in your chosen field. Generally speaking, student loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy. When Are Student Loans Dischargeable?
Student loans are dischargeable in bankruptcy under a very limited set of circumstances. In order to discharge your student loans, you must show that repaying your student loans creates an undue hardship. In order to prove undue hardship, you must show that you have no likelihood of earning income in the future, or the amount you will earn will not allow you to pay your student loans. You must also show that you have tried to pay your student loans in the past. This is a difficult hurdle to clear. Our attorneys, however, can advise you of your options and whether it is feasible to try to discharge your loans.
