NashvillePost.com has learned that starting salaries for new attorneys at Nashville’s major law firms are moving significantly higher.
The typical starting salary for a partner-track attorney at the best-known firms in town has been around $85,000, plus benefits, for about the last three years. One of Nashville’s largest firms, Bass, Berry & Sims, has increased its starting wages to $100,000 and has revised its benefits package, according to Keith Simmons, managing partner.
Simmons said the recent change was in response to salaries in the Atlanta market hitting an average of $115,000. “We are all about having the best people,” Simmons stated, “and it was a market-driven decision. We need to lead and not follow.”
The revised benefits package, Simmons said, involved a restructuring of deferred compensation to “roll all that into the 401(k)” retirement plan. He portrayed that decision as independent of the salary change.
Conversations with attorneys at other large law firms in town suggest that several were already heading toward six-figure starting salaries at about the same time Bass made its move, or are doing so now. At one firm that offers a generous match to employees’ 401(k) contributions, a source said a shift is underway to trade part of the match for higher starting salaries. In part, the change is meant to address the accumulated personal debt burden – “the size of a house note, in a lot of cases,” this observer said – that new attorneys often shoulder after undergraduate education and law school.
The last time attorney salaries saw a significant spike in the Nashville market was three to four years ago when California technology firms were raiding local firms with promises of better salaries and benefits. Simmons said the recent sea-change in salaries started at the Charlotte, N.C. law firm of Moore and VanAllen and spread to one of Atlanta’s dominant firms, Alston and Bird before the pressure to keep up with the competition reached Nashville.
