In 1879 asbestos began to be widely used as an insulation material. Products containing asbestos were also manufactured for commercial use. In 1899 Dr H M Murray wrote an abstract entitled ‘Curious Bodies’ describing a man admitted to his care at Charing Cross Hospital suffering from pulmonary fibrosis of ‘obscure origin’. He had worked for ten years in an asbestos factory, and his occupation was suspected to be the cause of his death (the first recorded death from an asbestos related disease) in 1900. Dr Murray’s paper was never published.
It was not until 1924, 24 years later that the first case of asbestosis was published in the British Medical Journal by Cooke, and between 1920 and 1935 more than 100 asbestos related articles were published. These included studies into the number of cases of asbestos related disease amongst asbestos textile mill workers, the first documented case of asbestosis found in a US Insulation worker, and finally a clear correlation between dust measurement and incidence of asbestos cancer was clearly identified in 1934.
In 1931 the UK government implemented the 1931 regulations to manufacturing facilities and mills where asbestos containing products were made or sold. These addressed concerns that asbestos exposure, particularly among textile factory workers led to lung damage.
In 1942 the first pleural mesothelioma case was reported by Welder, and in 1949 the Factory Inspectorate Report produced for the UK government went on to discuss the need for workers to be aware of potential risks associated with using asbestos based packaging in factories. In 1953 the very first documented case of mesothelioma in an insulation worker was recorded by Weiss and in 1955 McLaughlin reported an increase in the number of cases of asbestosis in the UK, especially among insulation workers.
In 1960 Wagner published a paper identifying a strong correlation between mesothelioma and occupational or environmental asbestos exposure. In the paper 32 out of 33 people diagnosed with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos. From the early 1960′s there was a rapid increase in the number of lawsuits against companies that had exposed their employees to the harmful effects of asbestos.
Although the first successful claim was made in 1929, the rapid increase in lawsuits began after 1960. The employers were accused to turn a blind eye to the enormous evidence that had been presented to prove the toxicity of asbestos.
Today, an increasing number of claims are being made by employees against employers who failed to implement strict safety measures for their employees under their duty of care, rendering the employer negligent. One of the reasons for this may be that the symptoms often don’t appear until at least 20 years after asbestos exposure.

Archaeological digs in Scandinavia found evidence of the use of asbestos in pottery dating back to 3000BC! The Romans mined asbestos from Europe and the Mediterranean and used it many of their everyday items such as table cloths, building materials and even robes. It is believed that the Roman Empire and the Ancient Egyptians knew the dangers of asbestos. Pliny the Elder, a Roman Author, recommended never to buy asbestos quarry slaves as they died young. Charlemagne, a Roman Emperor, had a party piece where he used a cloak woven from asbestos which he would throw onto fire, it wouldn’t burn and he claimed it was because of his supernatural powers! The name for the white asbestos; Chrysotile, comes from the Ancient Greek words for Gold Fibre. Modern production of asbestos began in Canada in 1879 and in 1880 an asbestos textile factory opened in Paris.  Only months later new asbestos factories began cropping up around Britain. In 1898 His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Factories commented that; “The evil effects of asbestos dust have also attracted my attention” In 1900 Dr H Montague Murray performed a Post Mortem in London on a 33 year old asbestos textile factory worker he noted sever lung fibrosis and asbestos fibres on the lungs.  He made the connection between his employment and his lung disease. From 1952 to 1956 the American tobacco company Kent used asbestos filter tips in their cigarettes. On 6th October 1967 the case of Smith v Central Asbestos Co Ltd was brought in court.  This was the first multi-party asbestos disease case issued in the courts of England & Wales. - See more at: http://www.pannone.com/media-centre/blog/personal-injury-blog/asbestos-a-history#sthash.7O34lCOr.dpuf
Pleural thickening describes the appearance of widespead (diffuse) scarring
along the lining of the lungs. While pleural thickening is relatively harmless in
some cases, it is also common among workers who were exposed to and
inhaled a significant amount of dangerous asbestos particles when the use of asbestos was prevalent in industries such as mining, construction and others.
Pleural thickening tends to be present in around 50% of cases where people
are known to have had prolonged exposure to asbestos. Pleural thickening
can cause shortness of breath and inhibit the lungs’ ability to function properly.
Pleual Thickening is non-malignant and is not necessarily a sign of asbestos
lung disease. Pleural Thickening is often a sign of exposure to asbestos, and
many people whose lungs show pleural thickening develop asbestos lung
diseases at a later date. Whether or not a person with pleural thickening will contract an asbestos-related disease is unpredictable.
Asbestos-related pleural thickening occurs when asbestos fibers bypass the
lungs’ filtration system and get into the lungs. Once in the lungs they become embedded and cause inflammation and scarring
Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the membranes that cover many of
your body’s organs, the most commonly effected area being the outer lining
of the lungs and internal chest wall, but it may also occur in the the lining of
the abdominal cavity or the heart, amongst others. People with asbestosis
also have a high probability of developing mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma can develop many years after exposure to asbestos; usually between 40-60 years. There is no clear indication of how much exposure to asbestos is needed to promote the onset of mesothelioma. Cases of mesothelioma have been documented with even 1-3 months of exposure, and even through indirect exposure, such as air ventilation systems.
The symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath due to fluid
between the lung and the chest wall, chest pains, and general symptoms
, such as weight loss.
Sadly, the prognosis for mesothelioma is poor. Around 85% of people who
are diagnosed with the condition will die within three years of being diagnosed. Every year in the UK there are approximately 1,800 deaths as a result of mesothelioma, and this figure is expected to rise further in the next few years
